Architect Dwight Holmes created the Appleton museum with classical proportions, but in a modern style, on a 44-acre site donated by the city of Ocala. It was built in 1984 as a gift from its namesake, Arthur I. Appleton, and houses his extensive art collectionFaced in Italian travertine, it is imposing by scale, but welcoming because of the broad portico. The double height lobby looks out over the central courtyard with its fountains, and the 30,000 square feet of gallery space is easy to navigate. You will also find three studio/classroom spaces, a 250 seat auditorium and a gift shop, all encircling the courtyard.    The permanent collections include African, European, Asian, Pre-Columbian and contemporary sections. We were delighted to find several Alexander Calder prints just as we finished our tour. The staff is friendly and knowledgable and parking is plentiful. Nearby are restaurants and shopping.
